In a letter to William Graham dated July 3, 1881, Darwin said he shared Graham’s “inward conviction” that the universe is not the result of chance, and then immediately adds the “horrid doubt” passage about whether a mind developed from “lower animals” is trustworthy, followed by the “monkey’s mind” line.
Darwin’s Doubt: if human beings evolved from simpler, non-rational life forms, and if our mental faculties are products of random, non-rational physical processes, can we trust our minds to reason rationally? Our beliefs function as survival systems but do they also hold the ability to discover reality?
The human mind is extraordinary, outshining all other creatures with its unparalleled cognitive abilities. Through this process we understand abstract ideas while discovering fundamental truths and grasping the enormous complexity of the universe. The abilities of these animals seem to go beyond what they need to survive. The process of natural selection focuses on survival benefits rather than actual truth because a belief system needs to function effectively for survival purposes even when it lacks accuracy.
Consider a simple analogy: John and Mark are asked to run blindfolded across a busy highway. John’s cognitive faculties are functioning perfectly, so he reasons that the act would be dangerous and refuses. Mark, however, has impaired reasoning and falsely believes there is no traffic—but also believes his feet are glued to the ground, so he doesn’t run either. Both survive, yet only John’s reasoning was based on truth. The example shows that survival depends more on unexpected events and incorrect reasoning than actual truth.
The human brain functions as a remarkable system yet scientists continue to investigate the deeper mystery of how the universe itself functions rationally. According to blind random processes everything should exist but why does our universe follow specific rules and mathematical order? Albert Einstein once stated that the universe defies all comprehension because we can actually understand it. This rational order—this structured, law-abiding cosmos—presents a profound challenge to the notion of an inherently chaotic, purposeless origin.
Order does not arise from disorder, just as rationality does not spring from non-rationality. To believe otherwise is akin to expecting a random scattering of Scrabble tiles to form a coherent sentence. The mind’s ability to reason along with the universe’s rational order both go beyond what chance can explain because randomness cannot explain either of these phenomena.
Science itself hinges on two foundational requirements: a rational mind and a rational universe. The absence of either would render scientific inquiry impossible. The two elements function together like a lock and key system because the rational mind serves as the key to access the rational universe. Human beings have struggled to find the origin of these two interdependent systems which operate in complete synchronization. Random chance alone fails to provide a satisfying explanation. Keys do not fit locks by accident; they are designed to fit.
The perfect arrangement indicates purposeful design which shows that an All-Knowing and All-Wise Creator exists. The development of rationality requires a foundation of ultimate reason which proves our cognitive faculties need such a source. The existence of God provides explanations for human intelligence and the universe as well as their ultimate meaning.
The Quran shows no intention to demonstrate God’s existence because it presents God as an obvious truth. Instead, it invites humanity to move beyond acknowledgment of His existence to recognition of His worthiness of worship. One way the Quran does this is by directing our attention to creation itself. Our world contains His signs of majesty and power and wisdom which make us think about Him and confirm His greatness.
As the Quran states: “Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding.” (Quran 3:190)
The purpose of the rational mind and the rational universe becomes clear when viewed through this lens. Both were given to us so that we may reflect on creation, recognize the Creator, and fulfill our ultimate purpose: to worship Him. Our creator who built all things and provided for us deserves our complete thankfulness and loyalty. Our ability to reason reveals His wisdom which leads us to worship Him through understanding and contemplation.
